Blue Marble Benefit
November 18th, 2020

Established 40 years ago as The Bay Institute, Bay.org dba the BayEcotarium today is the largest non-profit 501(c)(3) watershed conservation organization in San Francisco with six branches and a staff of 200, united under one mission to protect and conserve the Bay Area ecosystems from Sierra to the Sea. Human impact, pollution, climate and environmental changes have put a strain on the fragile ecological balance and biodiversity, prompting advocacy and awareness towards preserving the natural environment for future generations. While the Bay Institute has been addressing environmental policy and field conservation initiatives for four decades, the Smithsonian Affiliated Aquarium of the Bay with 24,000 animals in our care, and the Sea Lion Center on the historic PIER 39 celebrates its 24th anniversary this year. After decades of serving millions of visitors, it is long overdue for a transformation.

Envision the future!

The tectonic $260 million transformation of the Aquarium to the first of its kind Climate Resilience and Ocean Conservation Living Museum in the United States envisioned by President & CEO George Jacob, is designed to position San Francisco as a global destination of climate literacy and STEAM Education. With cutting edge exponential technologies, inventive and innovative test-beds for architectural sustainability, launch station for Deep Ocean Submersible research, observation decks for the sea lions, ocean conservation initiatives, and exhibit simulations developed with Silicon Valley partners, this would be a highly visible international institution amid a 3 acre public eco-park dedicated to the mission of conserving, preserving, and saving the Bay. An international team of experts came together to generate a Master Plan aimed at transforming San Francisco as a destination of climate resilience and a beacon of environmental movement and Hope.

Blue Marble Benefit

2018 marked the first Blue Marble event held at the Bently Reserve, where the vision for the BayEcotarium was unveiled with opening remarks by Dr. Sylvia Earle and the Key Note address by the former Second Lady of the United States, Dr. Jill Biden. The Blue Carpet Reception pays homage to the first image of our BLUE PLANET – Earth – taken on December 7, 1972, from a distance of about 29,000 kilometers (18,000 miles) by the crew of the Apollo 17 spacecraft on its way to the Moon, and is one of the most reproduced images in history. On July 21, 2015, NASA released a new Blue Marble photograph taken by a U.S. Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR), a solar weather and Earth observation satellite that was launched in February 2015.

The Blue Marble Benefit is a celebration of Life on earth and our commitment to nurture its beauty and its rich bio-diversity. The 2020 theme focuses on  noise pollution and high decibel levels in oceans impacting marine life.
