Climate Change and Sustainable Oceans
POSITION SUMMARY
The 3-month Climate and Sustainable Oceans Internship is designed to support the Bay Academy in the development and delivery of content for research, education and outreach. These programs span both children and adults, formal and informal teaching, and both nationally and internationally.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) represents the global action for climate action. At the UNFCCC 21st Conference of the Parties in Paris (2015), governments agreed that mobilizing stronger and more ambitious climate action is urgently required to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. Action must come from governments, cities, regions, businesses and investors. Everyone has a role to play in effectively implementing the Paris Agreement. Through initiatives such as the Marrakech Partnership, global climate action is being synergized among all stakeholders to lower emissions and increase resilience to climate impacts.
Ocean Conservation is a high priority for nations, especially ocean states and areas with significant coastlines. The creation and implementation of sustainable ocean initiatives span geopolitical boundaries, as the world navigates the balance of ensuring that ecosystems services are maintained to sustain life. Sustainable development of the Blue Economy has become a current focus of ocean states, especially Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
This position reports to the Director of the Bay Academy.
PRIMARY DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Report to and work with the Director of the Bay Academy
- Develop content on the climate change and sustainable oceans, in the context of the Environment, Education and Innovation.
- Conduct research on current global trends, innovation and case studies relevant to the UNFCCC and Sustainable Oceans, and present these in required formats
- Interpret UN Policy documents on the climate change and translate these into a variety of formats depending on needs
- Develop and coordinate the uploading of the online content of the Academy for climate change and sustainable oceans
- Assist in the creation of public outreach materials by infusing key messages on climate change and sustainable oceans into the content (social media posts, newsletters and other such outreach materials)
- Coordinate the design of a campaign on the climate action and ocean conservation for the Academy to improve awareness and generate action; this includes internal and external audience
- Assist with grant-writing and project design surrounding the climate change and sustainable oceans including conducting research for grant opportunities
- Support the development of a photo/video catalogue used for educational purposes
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of the Bay Academy
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this role successfully, the individual must have a minimum of a tertiary degree in Biology, Environmental Sciences, or related area, or be enrolled in a program to attain this degree. Knowledge of the UNFCCC and sustainable oceans; and current issues in the environment, climate change, blue economy, marine debris, plastic pollution, ecological connectivity, and other related concepts is highly desirable. Excellent organization, planning, time management and communication skills. A collaborative mindset and ability to work with varying and changing needs. Ability to work independently. Ability to manage numerous tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines, while not compromising quality. Must be able to work well with others. Passion for science, conservation, and San Francisco Bay required. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- 4-year college degree, with preferred emphasis on the environment, or currently enrolled in a program to attain this degree
- Experience in educational program development and delivery
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups and/or individuals.

The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Exhibit and Web-Content Development Intern
POSITION SUMMARY
The 3-month Exhibit and Web-Content Development Internship is designed to support the Bay Academy in the development and delivery of content for research, education and outreach. These programs span both children and adults, formal and informal teaching, and both nationally and internationally.
The exhibit spaces at The Aquarium of the Bay reflects the variety of habitats and species characteristic of the San Francisco Bay. The exhibits demonstrate vibrant content with accurate information on biological and ecological characteristics of the species under our care. We develop content and share this via several media, include our websites. This content is relevant and current, providing an attractive space for persons to glean accurate information on climate change and ocean conservation.
This position reports to the Director of the Bay Academy.
PRIMARY DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Report to and work with the Director of the Bay Academy, and supports the Multi-media Promotions Specialist
- Review and develop existing content in the Exhibit Spaces, with an intent to update and improve overall appearance and accuracy
- Work alongside the Education and Animal Care Teams to effectively demonstrate the characteristics of the habitats and species on display
- Assist in the development of web content to accurately depict our goals and current initiatives centered on climate change and ocean conservation
- Assist with grant-writing and project design surrounding the climate change and sustainable oceans including conducting research for grant opportunities
- Support the development of a photo/video catalogue used for educational purposes
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of the Bay Academy

UN Sustainable Development Goals
POSITION SUMMARY
The 3-month UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Internship is designed to support the Bay Academy in the development and delivery of content for research, education and outreach. These programs span both children and adults, formal and informal teaching, and both nationally and internationally.
The United Nations Member States adopted 17 Goals in 2015 which are described as a universal Call to Action to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere. These SDGs form an integral part of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which set out a 15-year plan to achieve the Goals.
This position reports to the Director of the Bay Academy.
PRIMARY DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Report to and work with the Director of the Bay Academy
- Develop content on the SDGs overall, but with special focus on SDGs 4, 7, 8, 9, 11-15 which have direct relevance to the Environment, Education and Innovation.

bay.org DBA BayEcotarium offers various internships during the summer months and through the year. While some of these are tied to specific project related grants, others are administered through the various departments and divisions within the BayEcotarium- an amalgam of five operative units that include the Bay Institute, Aquarium of the Bay, the Sea Lion Center, and the Bay Model Alliance.
bay.org is offering the following 3-month (minimum 16 hrs./ max 20 hrs. per week) summer internships. While the start dates may be flexible depending on academic semesters and associated requirements for credits, the duration of the internship will not exceed 4 months.

Exhibit Design Internship
Description: The Bay Aquarium is in the process of revamping and adding to its exhibit experience, both inside the aquarium and out. While the inside experience pertains to enhancing the visitor experience with marine life through interactive and engaging innovative content delivery platforms, ranging from the visceral to the virtual, the outdoor exhibits on PIER 39 range from themed installations, sculptural elements, scale models, murals, kinetic water features, and laser projections to solar-powered and visually powerful innovative enablers that contribute to cognitive learning.
Eligibility Qualifications: Ability to think spatially and creatively to design and produce exhibits that can engage with diverse demographics. Ability to conduct formative and summative evaluations of prototypes. Must be able to research comparable exhibit experiences and experiment with new ideas and interdisciplinary cross-over applications. Excellent writing and interpretation skills. Interest in the mission of bay.org/Bay Ecotarium.
Graphic Design/Branding Internship
Description: As bay.org transitions into its new domain under Bay Ecotarium, all its programs, collaterals and communication needs will be closely aligned in its design vocabulary and aesthetic treatment in conjunction with the new brand. The Graphic Design and Branding intern will be part of an exciting process of organizational transformation and focus group studies to establish the viability of the brand that will define this amalgam of institutions and differentiate it among peers.
Eligibility Qualifications: The required skills for landing a graphic design internship include sketching abilities, creative layout skills, knowledge of Adobe Suites (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), and strong communication skills with exposure to vector art image editing, 3D software, and/or data visualization. Self-starter, flexible, result oriented, with a good understanding of branding principles. Understanding of the mission of bay.org/Bay Ecotarium and the scientific content associated with each of its divisions.
Multimedia/Animation Internship
Description: Animations can range from simple GIFs to involved motion graphics. The multimedia/animation intern will be challenged with creative goals requiring work with Flash, Blender, Adobe AfterEffects, etc. Work would entail creation of presentation decks, animations, special effects, video edits, audio mixing, creating touch screen interactives for a variety of delivery platforms including social media.
Eligibility Qualifications: Interest in communications, new media, and video production. Must have a good attitude, a pleasant phone demeanor, a willingness to learn, and a portfolio. Should be Internet savvy and be able to provide samples of work including school projects, demo reel, YouTube / Vimeo channel etc.
Web Design/Social Media Internship
Description: Build and execute social media strategy through competitive research, platform determination, benchmarking, messaging and audience identification. Generate, edit, publish and share daily content (original text, images, video or HTML) that builds meaningful connections and encourages community members to take action on social media platforms, webpages, and blog. Optimize company pages within each platform to increase the visibility of company’s social content. Moderate all user-generated content in line with the mission. Create editorial calendars and syndication schedules. Continuously improve by capturing and analyzing appropriate social data/metrics, insights and best practices.
Eligibility Qualifications: Working experience or exposure to social media marketing or digital media environment. Excellent consulting, writing, editing (photo/video/text), and communication skills. Demonstrable social networking experience and social analytics tools knowledge. Adequate knowledge of web design, web development, e-commerce functionality and general awareness to ticketing and dynamic events calendar. Knowledge of online marketing and good understanding of search engines and data analysis. Positive attitude, detail oriented with good multitasking and organizational ability.
e-Learning Module Internship
Description: The e-learning module intern will play an important role in increasing the number of training resources available to the Bay Ecotarium clientele, including teachers and students, as part of an initiative to create the Bay E-Academy. The intern will work closely with the Conservation and Education departments to develop curriculum based learning modules from middle school through to undergraduate ad or graduate levels, as part of phase 1.
Eligibility Qualifications: Coursework in instructional design, educational technology, or a related field preferred. Two years’ minimum experience working with the creation of educational material online through membership portals preferred. Experience with graphic and e-learning software (Articulate, Adobe Photoshop, Premiere or other video editing software).
Educational/Curatorial Internship
Description: The Educational/Curatorial intern will work alongside our Education and Conservation team to craft new educational content for bay.org and its operations. Specifically, the Educational/Curatorial intern will work to create new public programming and update existing programming by researching topics and best practices, checking for accuracy, and updating outdated content.
Eligibility Qualifications: Experience with best practices for informal/formal learning strongly preferred. Experience working with science curricula strongly preferred. Passion for science, conservation, and San Francisco Bay required. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
